This is really interesting! smiley - biggrin Personally, though Flemish giants are way cute, I'm very happy with the Eastern Cottontails in the backyard. smiley - bunny

smiley - smiley This is a very helpful Entry I think. Everyone should think about which pet they get and wether it has any health problems just because they bred it to look cute.

Thanks both smiley - biggrin

I worked in mention of Flemish Giants as they are way cute indeed smiley - ok

Yes, definitely have to be careful with 'pedigree' animals - I was lucky that our cat adopted us A87906630 rather than the other way round, but I had an aunt who dedicated herself to caring for 'unsaleable' 'pedigree' animals that weren't very well, to give them the best possible life under the circumstances.

Caiman raptor elk - Inside big box, thinking.

Nice entry. There is a growing awareness for the health effects of breeding cute animals. Most of all for dogs, I think.

Selective breeding can be good for animals too (if we want to). We used to have (lots of) pet rats. When we started, most rats had a lifespan of 1,5 to 2 years. Most died of tumors (I think mainly because lab rats were selected to be sensitive for those in the first place, in order to test medication). Controlled breeding schemes appear to get rid of that sensitivity, keeping track which bloodlines developed tumors and which ones didn't. Our last rat died at over 4,5 years old (just old age).

Aww, good for you. smiley - smiley I'm a rodent fan, myself. Can't keep any now, what with the cats. But they are very affectionate.
