Some people read the latest viral gossip and say, 'Why?' I read it and say, 'Why not get snarky about it?'

Behold the actual story behind the 'algae won the war' business...TS Eliot and those cats are involved...

smiley - ok Some of my favourite topics in this Entry, so I very much enjoyed reading it smiley - biggrin (I like lichen)

One thing I wondered was whether there was a particular reason for the story going viral in April 2018 (given that it was 2012 when William Hague mentioned it...)

I couldn't find a particular reason - maybe it was just a slow news day, and they decided to spread this one around?

Aha! I found the answer. And it was pretty much what I thought.

There's a writer named Florence Schechter who does stories on Twitter - in a series of tweets and .gifs. With witty dialogue like, 'Woah, dude!'

Here's an article about it:

smiley - sigh I'm weary of all this sloppy research going viral. But I'll get over it - I've still got the 'flu, so I'm crabby. smiley - laugh

Ah smiley - eurekasmiley - ok

"With witty dialogue like, 'Woah, dude!'"

Like yeah!!! smiley - roflsmiley - roflsmiley - rofl

"Alan Turing's butt which I assume was da bomb." - no, it was Alan Turing's proto computer which was the Bombe smiley - rofl

This sort of thing is strangely new to me, so I find it quite amusing, but I can imagine it gets wearying rather quickly...
