Switching to secure http

Post 1

As of a couple of weeks ago, the entire site has switched to secure http (https) for everything.

This means that the connection between you, and us, is completely secure, and no one is able to snoop at what articles you read.

(Not that we believe this was a major problem before, but it's nice to know that it cannot be a problem in the future.)

You may, from time to time, find pages that contain "insecure" elements, this is usually due to articles containing images and we are working on a method where those requests are also forced to be via the secure connections.

You will also find that more and more of your favourite sites are switching to secure http (https) and in time, most of the internet will probably end up being secure.

You will not have to do anything, the switch is entirely automatic from your point of view, as there are plenty of people working behind the scenes to add this layer of privacy to your browsing.

Let's test whether https links now resolve in Ripley skins:

This is a known issue with the rendering engine and is not really related to switching transmitting all pages via https.

As the source code for the old Ripley engine is, shall we say "interesting", this issue is one that may, or may not be fixed in the near future, as it largely depends on stumbling across the snippet where Ripley determines of something is a link.

Hope that makes sense.

Is that the reason I'm now getting an error pop-up message every time I try and load up a page (even if I click 'back' to look at a page I looked at a second ago)?

If your browser is exceptionally strict when it comes to showing mixed content, then that could very well be the case.

As mentioned, there are elements (images) which are currently referenced by the insecure link in certain posts, and until we either get the system to rewrite stuff on the fly or get the magic hampsters to edit those posts manually, this will be a problem for the "lucky" 1%.

Sorry.

Rev Nick - give me poutine, or give me death

Has this change anything to do with the 'header' being a bit messed up in Brunel skin? Mine now shows:

. Rev Nick
. |
. Settings
. |
. Sign Out

Rather than the single line of a name and 2 clickable items

Milla, h2g2 Operations

if i understood right, these bits are hard coded to http, and the switch to https might have messed a bit with them... So, perhaps can't be fixed.
