Can't update my entry
Salamander the Mugwump Started conversation Jan 2, 2001
I've just been messing about for over half an hour trying to update an entry ready to take it over to peer review but it isn't getting updated. I've made 3 changes to it, clicked the update button can't tell you how many times but it seems to be progressing backwards - regressing, so to speak.
Yesterday, I changed it from plain text to GuideML and that was ok. Now the headings are back as plain text and the 3 new edits don't display. It looks fine in the edit window but the display is yesterday's article - 2 successful edits ago. Does anyone know what on earth is going on?
By the way, it's about prions (the things that cause CJD and mad cow disease) so if/when I ever get this editing nonsense sorted, please feel free to peer review it. Thank you for your kind attention.

Things you might be doing wrong:
1. Pressing Preview to check everything looks OK, then forgetting to press Update to make the changes permanent.
2. Going back to your "space" by pressing your browser's back button instead of using the "My Space" button. This old version of your page has a link to the old version of your entry.
3. Getting a Guide ML error in your article so that you can't store the updated version.

Thanks Gnomon. I've had a look at my prion entry and it's ok now. I really was pressing the update button and not the preview button. I wasn't using the browser's back button. There wasn't a GuideML error in the article (it's very basic - not much room for error). It must have been something to do with h2g2's speed I think. I haven't done anything to the article today but it's headings are now ok and the other edits I made are displayed.

If you have a look in the feedback forums there is a reply from Mark to someone who had a similar problem at around the same time.
It would appear the servers had a FUBAR for a while
But apparently its fixed now

Exactly the same thing happened to me this morning when I was trying to update an entry.
It previewed fine, but the update showed it hadn't altered.
I left the pc & came back, checked my entry & it's fine!

What's a FUBAR Bald Bloke? FUll of Bugs And Rats? I'm comforted that it wasn't just me. After I left the message here I went back and messed about some more and got absolutely nowhere. I'll have to have a look at Mark's answer. It's nice to know why you're utterly failing to make any progress at all.
How long did you leave it Archangel Galaxy Babe? I must have persisted with it for about an hour in the end, before I gave up and went to bed.
As a matter of fact, everything seems incredibly slow again this evening. Is it just me this time? I keep drifting off to other sites because I can't seem to get anywhere here at the moment. It's like trying to wade through glue.

I've just been over to look at the feedback fora Bald Bloke and the newest message I could find out of the lot of them was 6 days old. Do you mean the threads that hang off the feedback page that the feedback button at the top of this page, takes you to? I had my problem between 2am and 3am today (2/1/2001).

PS It seems to have speeded up again. It's enough to make you feel sea sick.
PPS I spoke too soon. Now I come to post this it's slowed right down again. I don't know how much longer I can keep my dinner down.

It IS very very slow , and I can't find the reason why in the Feedback forums either.
What this place needs is a "Why is it so slow?" forum.

perhaps we need the official 'ABU' award (almost bloody useless) for those running the site. The words 'it wasn't us it was them/somebody/the caterers/my mother' are ineligable. *Stir, stir*. It is bad!perhaps its because there's 50-60 people online instead of the 20-30over Christmas and New year.Pathetic!Do we only expect 30 at peak? what a popular site it must be!

http://www.h2g2.com/F48000?thread=96041&post=795857 OK - I found it, there you are! The feedback forum has several pages off it, I just clicked on "bug" and the thread was there at the bottom. FUBAR eh? I'll remember that one...

FUBAR is a term that will come in handy time and again now that I've stored it in that small, bowl of steaming porridge between my ears. I might even wear it out with overuse. Thanks Gnomon and Bald Bloke.
Ah ha. So there it is. I only looked at the threads on the page that the feedback button took me to. Yes, it seems I wasn't alone in my frustration. I suppose I should be more patient. I share my sympathy with you and those other poor folks who were gnashing and grinding their teeth yesterday morning Archangel Galaxy Babe.

Brace yourself! It's speeded up (a bit) again!
Scrub that remark. I don't think it got posted. I got "timed out" while I was waiting for it to go.

The site definatly seems to be in FUBAR mode today.
If I can get this to post I will be shocked
Sal for your benifit there are only three states that any complex system will work (or not as the case may be).
Firstly and colour coded Green is SNAFU (Situation Normal All F***** Up), this is the best you can ever expect from a real system.
Then Colour code yellow there is TARFU (Things Are Really F***** Up)
and finally as you are aware from todays performance at Colour code Red there is FUBAR (F***** Up Beyond All Recognition)
