Bannning gay marriage: what are we so afraid of?

Continuation of my earlier question:

In those countries that have allowed gay marriges, when they passed the act, what kind of reaction was there from the press and the general public, before and after the passing of the act?

The reason i'm asking is that us in UK can probably learn from the experiences of other countries. And use the knowledge to encourage the British Government in passing the act allowing gay marriges.

I am Donald Sutherland

>> many straight men enjoy anal manipulation (of these many are scared to admit it in public and of those who haven't tried it, many are scared of letting themselves go there). <<

I'm afraid that is true, and in doing so they are stifling the most erotic organ in the body. Thats the one between the ears, no the one between the legs.

It isn't the most sexually explicit thread though. You would be surprised how often topic drift leads onto sex - and no, it is unlikely the censors will jump on it. Just put Sex into the h2g2 search bar and take it from there.

hi Ged,

The Spanish government is working towards making same-sex marriages legal within the next couple of years. This is happening within a so-called 'Catholic country'. And the Cardinal of Seville has been quoted in the national newspapers as supporting same-sex marriages.

The point behind this is that it will help create more stability for people who are homosexual and want to have equal legal rights. And it is seen as actually creating more stability for society as a whole. Nobody here seems worried about the (imagined) implications this might have on heterosexual marriages.

So far, I have not seen any huge backlash from Spanish people feeling threatened by homosexuals being allowed to marry.

Thank Azahar

Its nice to see a country acting rationally for a change, towards the subject of gay marriage.

How did the transition go in other countries?

I wish our government (uk) would just do what everyone else does and ignore the Daily Mail, leave them to there own little backwards world.

Although that depends on whether it got through parliament or not?

Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

It was debated in the Commons on Tuesday. I think we can be cautiously optimistic that it goes through - although the unelected lot will doubtless do a lot of huffing and puffing.

There's and old story about when Field Marshall Montgomery spoke against legalisation of homosexuality in the Lords. He said 'I was in command of 300,000 men, and I can assure you that non of that beastly stuff ever went on in my ranks!' (cue massed tittering from all assembled.) This was the time of the notorious headline 'Lords Block Homosexual Bill's Passage.'
