h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Two questions,

1) Who did you prefer as Ford Prefect, Geoff McGivern or David Dixon?

I know that they are from two different mediums, but judge on their voices, the way that they say their lines.

2) Does anybody out there have any information on David Dixon as in stats, pics or links? Any help would be appreciated.

Having seen the TV series before I heard the radio series, I initially thought David Dixon was the best Ford; He fits best the description in the book. I think he gave the character a bit more of a -- 'Ford-Prefect-like' voice, for want of a better term. Although I must have listened to my copies of the radio series -- countless times now, so I don't know - but it's difficult to say much bad about Geoffrey McGivern's portrayal of Ford

I do think David Dixon's voice was more suited to ford though. It's strange. Like you can never accept anyone else to play the part of Arthur Dent. There can never be another Arthur Dent other than Simon Jones, and it's hard to imagine a character being played by another actor since you've seen/heard /one/ person pull it off beforehand.

I'm not making much sense, am I?

Oh, and in regards to David Dixon info - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0228797/ - There are no pictures on there, but it has limited info on him.

I'm pretty sure I saw David Dixon on a TV advert the other day (can't remember what it was for). I just remember thinking 'ooo - Ford Prefect'.

For my money, Geoff McGivern did 'cool' Ford better, Dixon did 'manic' Ford.

Yep, I'd agree with that. Geoff sounded almost bored in the radio series, but David really got into the role. And he has lovely eyes

I don't think McGivern's Ford sounded /bored/ as such. Cool and sophisticated moreso than the 'manic' Dixon's Ford, yes. I haven't heard David Dixon sing the Ol' Janx Spirit song whilst blind drunk, though.

What a good idea

It's a very good idea.
I only need to mentally play the bit Marvin says when he falls from the Cave into a hole in the ground to be rushing off to my Collectors' Edition CD set.

For me, it's the bit where Marvin convinces the Frogstar Robot to 'take out' the floor

It no longer matters, they will always be better than who is going to be playing him in the movie...ladies and gentlemen, Mr MOS DEF?!!!
Hoe badly judged is that?!

I'd have to go with Geoff at the moment, I think.

I'll wait an see how Mos Def turns out, though. You never know, he might actually be good.

Thanks aka* for the info.

I asked this because Ford was always my fave character, even before I saw David . I kind of felt bad that I wasn't as fond of Geoff, as he was the original Ford.

I must say that I was surprised that Mos Def was chosen for the movie, but I hope he will do a good job. Look at David, he is nothing like the Ford that was described in the book, but a lot of us seem to prefer him. I imagine that we will discuss this again once the movie is out.

I don't know - I keep getting put down for pre-judging their [the new actors in the movie] ability based on the 'predecessors' (for want of a better word) great performances - especially Martin Freeman as Arthur. I'm not pre-judging here, because I've seen him. A decent actor. But not an Arthur Dent.

And I can't say anything on Mos Def. Apparently he's a decent actor also, but I can't see him playing Ford (well), from what I've heard.

I thought David was perfect - he has the strange eyes, the intense stares, the hair...
