What can you hear outside of your home? - nowhere is actually silent (OK it is but only under lab conditions).

Yesterday I was walking out in the country when I was initially struck by the quietness except for birdsong. However, very soon I noticed that in the distance I could hear cars and planes.
Outside my house this morning I can hear:-
Birds
Cars
People
Water (pond)

Birds, the neighbours eating a late breakfast in their garden, and a train going over the viaduct on the other side of the valley.
I can't hear any traffic noise, which is odd given that I live 200 yards up the hill from the main road into Brighton and no more than half a mile from the seafront. On a hot Saturday that road should be rammed with traffic.

"computer humming"
Actually there is a hum outside my house that has been there for a year and I've never been out to find the source.

Currently I'm in an 'odd' room in teh house; its in the centre of the house, is windowless and doesn't have any walls in it that are external (I.E., outside walls of the house), I can hear on the inside of the house the PC, the other PC (fans are differnt pitch), the Hi Fi in the front room playing flaminco hardcore guitar music with Spanish vocals ocasionally in it... from outside the house I can still manage to hear; tables and chairs being dragged across the floor (admitidly this is from the restaurant downstairs I guess but its kinda outside in relation to my house), traffic, mainly cars, also a motorbike/thingy the wind as its started getting up a bit; though I imagine the nois eof the wind I hear is actually its interaction with the windows walls etc., of the house, so perhaps not offically an 'outside noise', I can distantly hear the 'boom boom boom ' from a I guess car hi fi thinggy, and a little while ago when I was in the front room and hence nearer a window I could hear some drunk so-called football fans making odd noises with their mouths that were very indistinct, walking up the road, towards the Alex I guess...

'Noisey' is one of the problems living pretty-much in the centre of town.... There are advantages, like being near the shops (all in walking distance), pubs (likewise all a five min walk away), train station (twenty min walk, five min cab ride), etc.... Its quite a bit quieter now, as the Hi Fi in the front room is currently not playing anything.... still got all the PC hum though hear a bit of traffic outside, can't hear the wind too much now, though we did have a helicopter circling round a few mins ago, but that appears to have moved over now I do* relaly* like it when I go to my Fathers, as its just so much quieter.... Its never really quiet here; I went to bed last night at about 3 AM this morning, and before I fell asleep I could hear several largeish groups of drunken idiots shouting as they wondered down the road, several cabs and cars pulling up and disgorging their contents.... etc.... quite annoying sometimes

The electronic cat deterrent. Now, it says on the packaging that it is 'above the range of human hearing'. Can anyone else hear theirs or is mine broken?

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Jun 10, 2006
I did once hear 'nothing' outside. I'd just driven out of the southern end of the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona and turned east. A few miles down the road I decided to pull over and get a bite to eat. I turned off the engine and stepped out of the car into complete silence. No birds, no insects, no wind, no other vehicles, no human habitation or activity within earshot - nothing whatsoever. I don't think I've ever experienced that outdoors, before or since. It was quite wonderful.

11pm Saturday night.
The sound of people standing outside the bar in front of my house, having tapas and chatting.
The occasional clip-clopping of horse-carriages going by.
The occasional motorbike or car.
No birds - they usually don't start up again until about 4am.
Also no 'tunas' tonight. Bit of a shame as I quite enjoy them:

At the mo at 12.33 at night I can hear people still partying on the beach in celebration of Englands win, with the backgroung noise of waves and the odd car.
Earlier it was car horns, singing, fire works and a general drunken rabble, again in celebration of Englands win, is it only me that finds that sad?
