Can't beat a bit of Heinlein. If you enjoy that, be sure to try the other Laz Long books. Particularly Number of the Beast, which doesn't start out as a Long book but through a series of odd plot twists, winds up as one. Not Laz Long, but exploring similar themes, are ===All You Zombies=== and By His Bootstraps, both also worth a look.

I've read a handful of Heinlein, but no Lazarus Long till now. I'll definitely seek out the others, as well as the other two titles you mention. Haven't read those, either. Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Gaaah, I think "All You Zombies" is one of the dumbest stories ever written. He's just trying to be overly clever with that one!

Well, that whole story is a set-up for the punchline, yes. But I like the way the title is taken from the end, so the book's one big loop, just like "Jane's" life.

Nah. Having to slog through some 20 pages of nonsense for a weak punchline is a waste of time.
And there's also the issue of his assumption that one's sexuality is tied to one's gender.

Well, it was written in 1959. Besides, some of the pleasure in reading Henlein is watching his attitude to sex and sexuality liberalise over the years.

Podkayne is still a bit girly, but yeah...
Nearly all of his female characters are purely ornamental, or used only for making the men look good. When they appear at all.

I went ahead and ordered the rest of the novels with Lazarus Long, and a collection of short stories with 'All You Zombies'. Those should keep me busy for a while.

Yep- that's the one! Now I'm looking forward to it even more.
The other titles I ordered are: "Revolt in 2100 / Methuseleh's Children", "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls", "The Number of the Beast" and "To Sail Beyond the Sunset".
This should get me through the better part of winter!

The Shipping News. Some of the strangest, most evocative writing I've ever encountered.

I didn't like Flashman (novel) that much, but I can't put my finger on why. (probably related to having read The Far Pavilions as a teenager)

not yet - I'm (re)working my way through Sharpe, then I have the rest of the Hornblowers, the O'Briens... then maybe I'll try more Flashman.

I really like Patrick O'Brien - the last one was in my most reent library book batch.
Currently reading Darwin's Watch, the third Science of Discworld book, and dipping in and out of Miss Read.

I was curious because I think I prefer the later ones. Flashman is a nastier piece of work in the first.
