Apologies to Stargate SG1 and Atlantis fans...

...I wasn't a fan. That sounds a horrible confession, considering I loved the Stargate film. The film actually really inspired me, and I had high hopes for the SG1 series, though I'm not sure why, I didn't really like it. And I didn't really see much of it. I have to confess though, Stargate Universe has me quite excited. I've seen three episodes so far and very much liked what I've seen.
Admittedly it's being compared to the more recent incarnation of Battlestar Galactica - of which I was mostly a fan so that's not a bad thing necesarily. Though I think Stargate Universe has a very different world - they're not trying to find a new world, they've got one, they're just trying to get back. And theres the comparisons to Star Trek : Voyager of course - except Voyager didn't really seem to use the concept enough. They didn't seem that worried to be that far away from home, as the ship was pretty much luxury accomodation anyway, and they spent most of the time preaching to those in the other quadrant how great the federation was - don't get me wrong I liked a fair number of Voyager episodes, I just think it could have been much much better.
I don't really comment much on TV stories in my journal, maybe I should more.

I haven't seen it, I wasn't a fan of Galactica and the reviews coming out of the US have been pretty dire

Liked the original Battlestar Galactica (a guilty pleasure, at least), never really got into the new version (for various reasons).
Didn't like the Stargate movie, I thought it was a bit dull and military - impressions that nothing I saw later did anything to dispel. It seems to me to just be aping the format of Star Trek but without the optimism and the iconic mythology.
Ooh, I'm being Mr Negative this week aren't I?

You've been taking those Ebenezer Scrooge tablets again haven't you?
Though I can hardly complain too much about what you've just said, since I've effectively said I dislike two series that are loved by many, and are equally justified in their belief that it is excellent telly. Just I perhaps did it in a slightly more apologetic way

Spent a lot of time around 'serious' Stargate fans at a convention a few years ago. I came to the conclusion they were a lot like Trekkies but with the average level of oestrogen considerably higher (ie more women there).
I would say that if Trek is the McDonalds of SF, Stargate is trying hard to be KFC...

I should add I didn't give the whole SG thing much thought either until that whole business with it claiming to be the world's longest running SF series (9 whole years or something).
Now that's just silly.
