Hyp, that actually happened to me. A woman had me looking all over the place for a book she wanted and it was in her hand 
Unfortunately it's not always the public that are the stupid ones. I had two staff come up to me today because the automated returns stopped working. I went up to the machine, pushed the dump-bin back in place, and hey presto!! Guess what, it worked!!

Some of the things people do are just amazingly stupid. It makes one wonder how the species has survived.
