In Germany it's usually "bees and flowers".
Did you know that...
... squinting will sooner (rather than later) fix the cross-eyed position?
(my grandma speaking)
... leaving the green part in a (when slicing it to prepare a salad) and eat it lets you become impotent .
(myslef at a camp to a group of teenagers, who had to prepare a salad. Saying the green parts are poisonous wouldn't make them cut them off - but impotence ...)

That makes more sense, I never quite got my head round how a bird and a bee, even a big bee and a small bird, were meant to, well yes.
Have you ever noticed (well now that you tell children things rather than be told, generally) that it doesnt have to be fact, it doesnt have to be believable, it just has to cover the adult at that point in time.

That reminds me of a Jim Carrey movie line - a child asks him if making a face will end up freezing the face into that position. Carrey replies something like, "No, but you might be able to make a pretty good living with it."
