I had never heard of this. Where do you get these ideas? smiley - cool

It appears that less than 500lb are harvested each year - or 1000lb depending on who you read. The difference may be 'dry' vs 'wet' weights. smiley - ill

Like with the oyster - it was a very brave person that first tried it, I think.

I wonder, as valuable as it is, if there are any forgeries, so to speak. And, how would you know?

...

Say, here's a (completely paraphrased) find:
Incredibly, Kopi Luwak is not entirely unique as a similarly processed coffee, called Weasel Coffee, is found in Vietnam.

Here's an article on actual research

Honestly, where do you come up with these things? smiley - laugh

I saw the film "The Bucket List" at the cinema on Tuesday. It was really funny how he kept bragging that he was drinking the most expensive coffee in the world and when he offered it to his not-so-well-off friend, he turned it down saying he didn't drink that sh*t. Only much later on does the friend confess how the coffee is "made" and they both are hysterical with laughter, which is one of the things on the "bucket list" - laugh until I cry. I must confess I laughed until I cried too, as did the rest of the audience.

And there I was thinking that the Blue Mountain was the most expensive coffee smiley - silly

I can see potential here. Maybe we could try to, er, manufacture "Hootoo Researcher Coffee"?

Hi McKay - I did a search for Kopi Luwak before I wrote it and found nothing - and searching now brings up 4 pages of mine! Possibly it was someone's journal? I'd never heard of it before I saw the film last week.

Thanks for reading and glad you enjoyed it smiley - smiley

Hi GB smiley - smiley

Good to see this - the subject was on my long list to do one day.

There's one big question you don't answer: how did we get to this point? Who brought it upon themselves to try this. Was it some ancient Indonesian tribal thing? (well, three questions...)

smiley - cheers Icy

Hi Icy smiley - smiley
Pailaway said in posting 2: <>

I've no idea who decided that sifting through civet poo and roasting the undigested beans to be ground, diluted and drank was a good idea. I'd give him a medal for bravery though, unless he dreamed it would make him a fortune, then I'd just put it down to luck or serendipity.

This is a great story to tell. I told it to my son and his girlfriend before our Mother's Day meal on Sunday (in a hotel) and my older daughter and my youngest son. I have yet to encounter my other daughter, it's not something I want to convey by text, I'm enjoying the facial expressions and the skin-tone shadingsmiley - ill

Yes, that should be okay, assuming we really don't know anything else about the origin of this coffee harvesting method.

known and accepted ?

Not sure if "of a sick mind" is the correct phrase. I think you're questioning their sanity, but "sick mind" suggests depravity. What do you think?
