Earningas street was renamed Ermine street after the Norman Conquest of England. Count Alan Rufus, the leader of the Bretons in England, was tenant-in-chief of properties the length of this road from north of London to York and beyond. Ermine, the winter fur of the stoat, is emblematic of purity, honour, the Virgin Mary and Brittany.
