I just wanted to drop you a note to say... I like writing (been published - poetry - in Eire) and would like to know the sort of things you look for - just to change my style a bit, etc. Only been on this site for 24hrs or so and am amazed at the diversity of the people and the sheer size of the site - it's a bit like IKEA the first time you go round one - ever so slightly confusing and really rather nice. I am a complete novice at computors and fiddly bits (altho I can now do s and icons after being referred to the right page by another researcher. I'm learning! Pse get in touch and give me an idea of the sort of stuff people write, or refer me to the right area and I'll eventually find it. Cheers one

Hi Witchone - nice to meet you. I got notified of your posting because of having posted to this thread in the past - or maybe it's because I have Z listed as one of my friends it is confusing!! - but the confusion and muddle adds to the fun!
I'm sure Z will talk to you soon about writing but - as you can probably see - there is a vast range of experience and talent out there and anybody can join in. You could start by putting some of your poetry on your Journal part of your space if you like.

Thanks for responding... never occured to me to bung some verse on my journal space, but I'll have a go and see what happens. Having a literal mind, journal = diary = witterings and angst and soul searching - the sort of thing you get at 3.00am when the night sweats hit you big time and whilst you're cooling down you get to wondering "Whats it all about >really< when you get down to it. Those sort of thoughts. Not "pomes". What a good idea. Thanks .

Hey Witchone welcome to h2g2, (hello again Vegantoo)
Firstly there are two sorts of writing on h2g2,
The first sort is anything and everything that you write, that includes conversation threads and you journal. You can also add a guide entry, (if you click on contribute there's a list) and this unedited entry will be part of the guide.
If you want more people to go to your unedited entry then you can put a link to it on your personal space or promote it in a number of other ways.
There's also the Edited Guide, this is what the scouts pick the entries for. DouglasAdma's oringinal project was to create the earth edition of the hitchikers guide to the galaxy. They're looking for factual enteries about anything.
What scout look for can be found in the "writting guidelines" you can find them here --> A53209 any question you know where I am !

Thanks for your reply - and to vegentoo for passing it on. Have done all the appropriate "clicking" and so on, and have come to the conclusion I'd better learn some computor jargon and MSL before I start writing "properly" - I have some ideas for topics that don't appear to be covered yet, but as I've only been playing with a PC since Easter Monday, I've an awful lot to learn "technical wise" before I can do anything creative - which brasses me off, somewhat, but also gives an impetus to learn... Vegentoo suggested I put some of my poetry in journal entry form, which I tried this morning, but I don't have the ability to lay out the work as it "should" appear -Tabs don't seem to work on text entries. The only way I can think of doing it so far is to copy the poem from my word processing part of the PC and then paste it onto the journal entry. It seems a horribly long winded way of doing it (if indeed I can manage it ) any guidelines/ways of doing it you can suggest please? Sorry if I appear to be taking the mick, I'm not, honest. This computor jargon is a totally foreign language to me so far, and the only way to learn a new language I guess is to make a bold stab at it, fail, learn by your mistakes and try again. Once the car is fixed and returned I can resume computor classes and maybe - just maybe - have a more appropriate vocab. the next time I need to ask questions. Thanks

Z Posted May 1, 2003
Nonsense! you don't need computer knowledge to write on h2g2!! what you do need is what you've got ideas.
We'll help with technical questions...
in text entries you're right the tab doesn't work, but if you want to set a poem out you can use the space bar to but it the way you want.
Eg I can do something like this just by clicking space bar a lot...
A
B
C
D
E
Don't worry about computer jargon, there's lot of us who can help you with that.

Oh Okay, that didn't work.
I would advice you against cutting and pasting from word, because word has some hidden characters, and it comes up a bit differently if you cut and paste into word..
There is a solution to this, and it may seem a bit more complex... but don't worry it isn't!
If you create a guide entry, you
Start of by putting
Write your entry exactly how youwant it, using the space bar to lay it out how you want it..
Then finish off with..
Now click on the display in "guide ML" and change format,
then on update...

brilliant! Thankyou! I shall get cracking on a couple of entries over the course of the next few days, and ask "technical" questions later then. Thanks also for showing me how to set out the pomes - I shall probably bore the drawers off people pontificating over the course of the next few months (I've got SCREEDS of the stuff!!!!)
I think I've found my spiritual home!

AAAAH! Are people stalking me ? Everytime I look up someone's name i find a note to me... (BC aparently suffering from paranoid delusional narcisism)

BryceColluphid Posted May 18, 2003
No, seriously, I guess H2G2 is set up so that messages can be left on one's personal space tailored to individuals, right ? Only I didn't know it had those capabilities. It's been a little disconcerting to find messages directed to me when looking up the spaces of people I don't know other than through Lil's .
