A Conversation for Just-in-Time Manufacturing

Actually the Yanks invented JIT

Sounds incredible, but it was an American invention spawned from 'Quality'. The premise being that if you reduced safety stocks you had to improve Quality.

Some Japanese buisiness folk who were touring the US after the war as a part of reparations came across Demming etc. and invited them home. There is an unsubstantiated story that when the MD of Datsun (now Nissan) walked around a Ford plant, he commented that they couldn't afford the inventory required to run the plant.

The Profs went East and the rest is history. Toyota are undoubtedly the greatest exponents of JIT, but if you look at some of their additional/complementary disciplines you can see how they have made it work well.

However - very good piece, where should this thread go from here?
Potentials:
KANBAN and ANDON how they work and how they fail
Lean Manufacturing
Agile Manufacturing
JIT in the MRO Environment
Supply Chain - what is it? Who should manage it? Who pays for it?
Calculating Safety Stock and its impacts

Just some thoughts - if anyone is interested I could collaborate.
