A Conversation for UK Petrol Stations

In the UK it is illegal to use a mobile phone on a filling station forecourt. Apparently this goes back to WWII when there was a chance of military radio transmitters causing fuel to ignite.
Can anyone confirm this?

Seen a thread in h2g2 somewhere that reckoned the reason mobiles (and CB radio transmitters) were banned from forecourts was that the radio emmisions upset the delicate pump electronics and did not correctly show how much fuel had been drawn. Basically, transmitting enabled you to rip-off the garage. They loose money and so these items were banned.
I'm sure that nowadays the electronics in pumps are shielded from radio waves and so ends another scam.

Well, actually at the petrol stn I work at mobile phones are not allowed to be used on the forecourt. The station is new but it appears that manufacturers haven't shielded the pumps.
