Curcumin is a key ingredient of the spice turmeric, and is good for memory.
It has been shown to be protective of nerve cells, making it potentially useful in conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Scientists at the Salk Institute (USA)say that 'Since it has both neuroprotective and memory-enhancing properties, it may be unique in treating clinical disorders associated with the loss of nerve cells and cognitive abilities.'
It is a powerful anti-oxidant and one theory is that it acts as a scavenger, attacking free-radicals that damage the nerve cells in memory and mental functioning.
Some research shows that South Asian populations, who are among the highest users of the compound, have low rates of AD.
