Years and years ago, must be late 1970s, early 1980s, York University's Computing Department (together with Exeter University, if I recall), were out in the van, spearheading the development of wide area networking, as part of JANET - the UK's Joint Academic Network.
I think there was a PDP-11 minicomputer (of blessed memory) there which connected to JANET and ULCC (University of London Computing Centre) and places beyond.
Some wag had named the machine BALHAM - gateway to the south !
