Goodbye Douglas

Your imagination has given me such please over the years - your thought patterns open a new doorway of thinking for us to go through in the 21st C.

Wish you'd seen more of what you thought of when it actually happened. When you talked about finding the question, that is our problem now.

Loved the original series - struck home and thats how I see 'Hitchhikers' and always will.

Thanks

As the name and email suggest Douglas' books have,do and will play a big part in my life. It was a great shock to find out from the 6pm news that the man who has brought so much fun and joy to the world had died at sucha tender age.

It is beholden on all of those of us who keep the books in our lives to ensure that a special place is kept for DNA in our hearts.

Douglas is reputed to have had a filter on his mail that binned all mail that did not come from a previously known source, because he got so much of it.
Let us hope that all the mail that is hitting the great bit bucket in the ether sings out the praises of a modern literary icon and justified Technofreak.

Long live the memory of Douglas Adams.

My heart goes out to his family and close friends of which I am sure there are many.

"The lights went out in his eyes for absolutely the last time ever"

Goodbye Douglas
So long but never forgotten

I couldn't hope to think of anything that hasn't been said already, but had to say something. The world has lost a real comic genius, and my sympathies are with all those who knew him personally.

So long, and thanks, Douglas.

Just heard the news 30 minutes ago; sincerest condolences to Jane and Polly. I'm sure DNA knows the question now, though this is a sad day for the Universe.

They gazed at God's Final Message in wonderment, and were slowly and ineffably filled with a great sense of peace, and of final and complete understanding. Fenchurch sighed. "Yes," she said, "that was it."

They had been staring at it for fully ten minutes before they became aware that Marvin, hanging between their shoulders, was in difficulties. The robot could no longer lift his head, had not read the message. They lifted his head, but he complained that his vision circuits had almost gone.

They found a coin and helped him to the telescope. He complained and insulted them, but they helped him look at each individual letter in turn:

"We apologise for the..."

The last one was a long one, and Marvin needed another rest before he could tackle it.

"...inconveni..."

After a final pause, Marvin gathered his strength for the last stretch.

"...ence"

and staggered back into their arms. "I think," he murmured at last, from deep within his corroding rattling thorax, "I feel good about it."

The lights went out in his eyes for absolutely the very last time ever.

Titania (gone for lunch)

It's now several years ago that I happened to hear someone talking about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, quite accidentally, on the radio. I shook my head, thinking I must have hear wrong - there CAN'T be such a thing as a guide to the galaxy.smiley - erm

And then, like it sometimes is, those words seemed to be poppping up everywhere... radio, TV, newspapers, people talking - and it drove me nuts! Determined to find out what was going on, I managed to find the books - and bought them all, and read them everywhere, even on the commuter train, laughing out loud, with people staring at me!smiley - biggrin

And then I read something in a newspaper about a site called h2g2.com, checked it up - and joined! I've met so many people, and made so many new friends - with such a lovely twisted sence of humour! Thanks all smiley - hug, and thanks DNA!smiley - rose

Douglas Adams had a unique outlook on Life, the Universe and Everything and his ability to communicate his ideas has given millions of people the opportunity to look at life from a different perspective.

I accidently tuned in to the very first episode of the original transmission of The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and was hooked - I've been a fan ever since.

My brother-in-law, Colin, is also a fan and whenever we get together, at some point, we end up firing "Guide" questions at each other.

Thank you, Douglas, for all the enjoyment and entertainment you brought into my life - you will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathy to all Douglas's family

Mike

When I first heard the news, I thought it was some kind of sick practical joke, but, of course, it wasn't. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said about him in better words, just that, like everyone else, I'll miss him...

What can I say? My deepest sympathy’s to his family and friends.
For many people like my self we all feel we have somehow lost a friend and mentor who taught us to look at the world in a different way and laugh.
