A Conversation for Mexico's Drinking Water

I always thought boiling water made it safe but recently, where I work, we've been told not to use the tap water even for coffee and tea making. And I don't work in Mexico, I'm in the UK!
On a holiday in Africa I took a supply of water purification tablets, (Used to indulge my tooth brushing habit, keeping the bottled water for drinking.) but I was unable to get the 2% tincture of iodine that my guide book recommended. We survived without but I'd be interested to know whether its generally advised or just for the really paranoid.

Hiya Wazungu
Just noticed these messages about Mexico's drinking water. Hope all the posters don't think the authors are being neglectful. I'd better tell Nobody Particular that he has visitors. He wrote this article. Bossel and I have been included as writers and researchers because we made some useful suggestions when the article was in peer review. We've had a debate over at h2g2 soapbox about whether it was right to give us such an enormous honour for such a humble contribution. Anyway, Nobody Particular's the boy for the job. I'll nip off and tell him.

Well, and this is only in my humble opinon, I think that the Iodine 2% thingy is really just a myth.
Do not get me wrong, it is really good for you, though you can do without just fine.
So do not fret!
