But I do quite like Rupert to. ~It reminds me of a rather wonderful character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He always gets all the best lines

The Total Perspective Vortex was in Fit the Eighth of the radio play. I don't think it was in the books. Great concept though. Kudos to DNA for that one.

I think it should be called The Blackout. That's how it felt, anyway, from the point of view of this average user.

The total perspective vortex is in the books. Darned if I can remember where though...
Anyhoo, I go for Rupert or H0G0

Zaphod gets thrown in the fake total perspective vortex, I believe it's during the second book.
And, for something completely different.....
I realize that it's 2am here and I just got home from the ER, so I'm probably missing something utterly obvious, but *where* did Rupert come from?

The Researcher formally known as Dr St Justin Posted Mar 14, 2001
From 'Mostly Harmless'. It's the name of the ficticious tenth planet in our solar system, named after the parrot belonging to the astronomer who discovered it. I think.

MaW Posted Mar 14, 2001
No, it was just named after "somebody's parrot". I think it's a good name for a period of downtime.

No doubt about it!
*pulls out a little tapedeck, puts on a recording of tens of thousands of people shouting RUPERT! RUPERT! RUPERT!*

LOL! Weirdly, I just pulled the name Rupert out of thin air - it's an amusing and utterly incongruous name for an event - same kind of rationale for '42', we're led to believe. I'd completely forgotten that it was the name of the 10th planet in the books...!

Ru-pert! Ru-pert!
*dances around to the beat of the thousands of shouting people on 1-i's tape recorder*

Oops. Sorry. Browser behaving badly.
I think it would be soo cool to be able to say things like: "Well, during Rupert, I used to..."

Yeah, it'd be a real cool story to tell our grandchildren...
"Son, I remember when I was young, once, during the Rupert..."

Abi Posted Mar 14, 2001
In a totally non italic way I vote for Rupert too. During Rupert, I got very stressed and made my friends lives a misery!!

"Ah, yes, boy. You've never had to live through a Rupert, but I have. Back at the turn of the century..."

And if there should be other Ruperts in the future, it would be: "I remember back during Rupert I, when I..."
