Last night (Tuesday) I went over to Lina's after physical therapy. She was dressed in black as usual. She led me to Amitabul, where I discovered that 1) they had added meat items to the menu and 2) they had opened a new Amitabul on Devon and Milwaukee. Amitabul, like every other significant thing in my life, has changed.
We went to a new bar across the street (it's replaced the old Viennese Brauhaus) and had 7 & 7s. Joe Sylvester approached us-- a slight, balding man with a lean, pleasantly anxious way about him. He was looking for sponsors for a cancer run. "Sly," as we learned he was called, was himself a survivor of Hodgkin's disease. He was divorced 7 years ago and had just recently become engaged. While battling cancer, he was a world championship backgammon player. (He showed us a book of backgammon moves that devoted a whole chapter to one of his championship games.) Needless to say, we sponsored him.
Lina spent a lot of time commenting on the music in the bar and adjusting the painting next to her. We made out in the truck but I didn't go upstairs; she had barbell class at 6 the next morning.
This morning, I had an Italian sausage omelette at Pete's snack shop. Pete sat in front of the t.v. hanging above the window loudly commenting on the Jerry Springer show with a thick accent. At first, the toothless waitress seemed unhappy to see me, then she asked "How have you been?" As I was leaving, a bald , athletic teamster built like a robot came in-- he was unable to understand what Pete was saying.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
