Can someone please remove this nonsense? I have never read such badly researched, ill-informed and offensive drivel. If there is anyone out there who is genuinely and seriously interested in finding out about the language of Birmingham, then I suggest that, rather than bother with this rubbish, they either read the excellent 'Proper Brummie - A Dictionary of Birmingham Words and Phrases' (by Carl Chinn & Steve Thorne, published by Brewin Books - www.brewinbooks.co.uk), or check out Steve Thorne's article, 'Brummie is beautiful', published on the Ask Oxford website (www.askoxford.com).

I quite agree...the only definitive guide to the Brummie dialect is "Proper Brummie".
And I hear that the book has just won an award as one of the Outstanding Reference Works of the Year by CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals)
Well done, Steve and Carl.

I am looking for some feedback on a few questions and I was wondering if anyone out there can help me!
People from Birmingham:
Do you find that ANYONE can actually do a GOOD immitation of a Brummie accent?
If you have a Brummie accent, do you feel proud of it? Have you ever been discriminated against because of your accent?
Do you think that there are enough people with Brummie accents on T.V.? Or do you think the accent is neglected in the entertainment field?
People NOT from Birmingham:
Do you like the Birmingham accent? If not why not? If yes, why is that?
Why does the Birmingham accent have such bad press?????????
Can you help me come any closer to an answer!!!!!
Im going to go out and have a look at this "Proper Brummie" book, it sounds like a good place to start!

I'm currently adding the finishing touches to a PhD thesis looking at evaluative reactions towards the Birmingham accent. If you'd like to know more about the findings from my research, you can contact me at [email protected]
