Book Review: "Wolves of the Calla," by Stephen King

With two toddlers it can be hard to find time to read. Lately though I have found time to catch up with Roland the Gunslinger from Stephen Kings “Dark Tower” series of novels. Admittedly I am behind the times on what’s new at the bookstore. “The Wolves of the Calla” is the fifth novel of the “Dark Tower” series which follow the quest of Roland the Gunslinger and his companions in an epic quest to save all of creation. In actuality to say this is part of a series is misleading, as the storyline of the series intersects many of King’s other novels. For “Wolves”, it may be best if the reader has already read King’s vampire masterpiece “Salem’s Lot”, as it ties into the story greatly. (Also I should mention that any readers will want to read the first four books of the “Dark Tower” series to be able to follow the story.) In addition to his other stories, King also intersects other popular series, such as Star Wars, Marvel comics and Harry Potter, though intimate knowledge of these is not required to enjoy this novel. “Wolves”, is a great read, it slowly builds up to a great ending. King is able to do what a lot of writers have trouble with when writing a series, creating a cliffhanger ending that has a feeling of completion and not just saying “to be continued.” I can’t wait to start reading the sixth novel in the series’ “Song of Susannah.”
My review may be a little skewed as I am admittedly a huge fan of King’s and with the exception of his novel “Dreamcatcher”, he hasn’t written anything I haven’t enjoyed. I would like to hear from anyone with a differing opinion or any suggestions of novels that I might like. Don’t be afraid to leave a post or email me at [email protected].
