I noticed that there were no guide entries on the Japanese art of taiko (drumming). As I am teaching a class on taiko, I thought I would compile a brief synopsis and offer it for your consideration.
Thank you!
cheers-

Very nice. Shouldn't have any problem getting Edited.
It does sound a bit like a lecture on Taiko. While reading it, I was reminded of the sermons my martial arts instructor gives at the end of every lesson on the way of Capoeira (my chosen martial art).

An interesting entry and an enjoyable read. A couple of times I've seen (on tv), Japanese drummers playing enormous drums whilst lying on their backs. They played with enormous vigour and the sound was wonderful - very moving. Was it Taiko I listening to and watching? If so, I can confirm that I love the sound of those drums.

Too much niceness... must... post... negative comments...
Dang. This is tricky. It's a great entry.
One question is "where do I go from here?" - I want to visit sites of taiko associations on the web, for example. Got URLs?
Daihachi Oguchi == Oguchi Sensei ?? This needs explanation...
> "Originally, drums came from China and Korea, and later with Buddhism, from India."
I think I know what you want to say here - but it feels a little clumsy... could it be rephrased?
> "religiosity"
That Can't be a word!

Aside from those nitpicks - this is wonderful. Perfect. Fabulicious. And lots of other good stuff... The last section was particularly inspiring I thought. More great stuff like this, please...

Yes, that's taiko!
There are several stances and positions used depedning upon the piece being played and often the region it originated from. There's a lot I didn't say about taiko in that piece for the sake of space. Theposition you describe is particularly grueling because it requires so much stregnth in your abdominals (have to do lots of sit-ups or you can hurt your back).
Thanks for your comments... I"m glad you've seen some performances and enjoyed them.
cheers-

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Sometimes its easy to get stuck in the "lingo" of a community (especially a non-English speaking one!) and miss these sorts of things.
So:
Yes, I can include URL's for additional references... perhaps at the bottom? At this point there is only one written text on taiko that I'm aware of and its about the Kodo dummers... hmmm you've given me an idea!)
"Sensei" roughly translates as "Master" or "teacher" in the highest sense of the word. Its used in marital arts as well. Thanks for pointing out the need for clarification.
"Originally drums came from...." Heehee.. I see what you mean! Yes, I can rework that.
"Religiosity"... hmmmm my spell checker liked it, though I had to pause and think about it. I'll check.
Is it the custom for me to post an edited version at this point? Do I do that as a response to this conversation?
Thank you for helping me make the writing clearer!
cheers-

custom is for you to edit the existing entry (edit page button), and come back and tell us when it is fixed. Then nothing happens for ages, entirely by chance, until a scout happens to see it and recommends it...
We call it "progress"

Perhaps you might add http and :// to the links at the base of the article; otherwise people can't click on them.
This is a very comprehensive and well-written article - well done!

This entry continues to be interesting and well written and it would be nice if a scout picked it soon.

Hi Sal
Thanks for the endoresement... I was beginning to think this entry was lost forever in the depths of Peer Review.
I have another one languishing in there as well... sigh. ( I did notice I need to fix those url links....!)
I better get back to work on those bats!

Ariel, which other entry do you have languishing ... sigh. I liked the Taiko so much, I'd like to go and read your other article.
You can find out how to do the url links at "How to write entries in GuideML" http://www.h2g2.com/A395552
If you haven't got time to go there, do them like this:
Link to Rolling Thunder
I think I've got that right. You could probably just copy and past it then update to test it.

Really great entry, and I was about to start a vigorous rant about seeing it still hanging around in the Peer Review...
Well, the Edited Entry is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A516548, and was already featured on the front page on 13 Mar. So all it takes is to move this thread over to where it belongs

I wonder how long it will be before this thread is moved out of Peer Review. Taiko's an excellent entry and it's been part of The Edited Guide for almost a month now.

looking at the Scouts' page, there are some 10 applications pending, unanswered for a week. The h2g2 human resource team seem to be having a rather gorgeous lunch break
Congratulations!
