Here again at last. My favourite month. Unfortunately, it's not been proper September yet. The first few days were still very August, very summer.
At the moment we're having pouring rain.
What I like about September is the misty sun and the coolness of the mornings, the light, the trees starting to colour, the smells and the fruits and nuts. You can still live outside, but it's definitely autumnal and has its own atmosphere.
And I spend most of the month singing to myself Georges Brassens : Le vingt-deux de septembre, mes souvenirs de vous,
le vingt-deux de septembre, aujourd'hui je m'en fous.
Only I usually forget to sing it on the 22nd.
It translates:
the 22nd of September, my memories of you
today, I couldn't care less.
No particular reason for this choice of song. I could go round warbling "Try to remember the kind of September, when you were a young and mellow fellow...."
In fact, having written that, tonight I probably will.
Definitely a month to wax lyrical. Love it.
Try to remember, and if you remember, then follow, follow your heart.
No idea what it's supposed to mean. Perhaps it means you get nostalgic in September and should enjoy it.
Nostalgia: September:
New school uniform, gabardine skirt, new shoes. New hair ribbons. New books (the smell of paper! new exercise books! Sharp pencils!).
Harvest Thanksgiving. Here where I live we have new wine and onion tart (traditionally). The roads are full of tractors carrying tobacco leaves (doesn't bother me now I bike to work), cabbages and later on, sugar beet and brussels sprouts.
Oh my God - getting nostalgic about Brussels sprouts. What am I doing?

Its a long time from May to December, but the days get short when you get to September or similar anyway.
I think the idea is the comparison between September in the year and the September OF our years.
I don't have a favourite time of year, what a miserable sod I am.

I loved the Fall when I was in college because all my friends came back in town.

The old wives summer is my favourite. It has some certain smell of decadence... I have to admit that September around your corner looked stunning.
The nostalgy of September can be very painful. The other day I hitchhiked for 100 km and at some point I found myself sitting on the roadside all . I wasn't unhappy though.

Do you remember the 21st night of September?
Love was changing the mind of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember,
how the stars stole the night away

You've said it all,
My favourite month too. Cupboard full of chutney, jam and pickles. Freezer full of fruits and veg and the thought of cosy coal fires is appealing. Though I am not sure I like the dark mornings and nights that come towards the end.
I love the cool mornings, out feeding the birds, as they start singing again, and watching for new arrivals we haven't seen throughout the summer.
The trees are wonderful. I couldn't live somewhere with no trees.

I enjoy the first dark nights and dark mornings. They do begin to pall around March though.

I love autumn. I used to think that I liked Winter best - and certainly it is very beautiful and when you get those cold, crisp days it is fantastic.
But nothing smells as beautiful as early autumn. And the colours are spectacular. It's then that I really appreciate the fact that we live in the country. I don't mind dark evenings - there is plenty to do indoors, and the odd warm sunny day (warm, for Autumn) when you can be outside just ... being - ah I am looking forward to it.
Of course I love spring too, and am a recent convert to the idea that summer doesn't totally suck.

Yes, the old season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is the nicest time of the year. But we've had days of rain and biting cold. Not quite so nice.

we have blazing sunshine today - so I spent the day in the indoor swimming pool and having a nap in my dark bedroom.
what a waste!
