It would actually have to be 6x9. As Arthur says in the radio show and the television show, "I've always felt there was something fundamentally wrong with the Universe." Or something like that. Oh, blast, I'm posting in a Conversation Forum instead of a Roleplaying Forum.

In BASE 13, 6 x 9 = 42. But DNA himself pointed out that no one tells jokes in base 13. I'm inclined to agree with Arthur; it must be our fundamentally wrong universe acting up again. 
It tends to do that a lot, doesn't it? Blasted universe!
