This is an excellent read. A bit long but very interesting.
I used to describe myself as an agnostic. Might I now turn into an agno-stoic?

I should probably warn you that this is only a link to two essays in a series of three
I will try to locate the third. Until then have fun with this

this is almost Adamsian: "I have lately made a practice of pausing, before sending e-mails, to look for and delete material that has no function in the message other than to let the reader know what a wonderful person I am. In many cases, I end up deleting so much material that there is no longer a message worth sending."
(Adamsian = something Douglas Adams ("Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy") might have written)

I didn't find exactly what I was looking for but I think I have found what I needed to find

Here's an idea for all you stoics out there. It might help you remember what you are aiming for

I got that watch after watching a lecture by Sam Harris on Death and living in the present moment.
This is part of a longer lecture, but it gets the idea across.

Stoicism always remind me of stodgy suet puddings and keeping a stiff upper lip.

Many Hollywood actors/actresses get face-lifts, which gradually tighten the skin on their faces. Julie Andrews seems to have a permanent smile.

re post 8:
paulh, the wristwatch is quite simply to remind you to live in the present. The here and now.
I might add that one shouldn't become excessively philosophical and overthink this - but that would already be taking it too far

Getting a life would be nice....

I would be happy to help but I need the only life I have myself
I once described the aforementioned clock as being perfect for Pheasants. Since their brains are so small they can't grasp the concepts of neither past nor future and thus only live in the present

There's no time like the pheasant.

The pheasant presently present
on a shelf in my garret
is waiting, anticipating
a bath in a bottle of claret
( Okay so we now have both puns and silly poems in this thread - but I guess if we can accept fusion cuisine we can also accept fusion threads )
