Why was Blake dropped from the series for a period of time?

I saw an interview with Gareth Thomas in which he stated that one of the reasons he left was dissatisfaction with the direction the character of Blake was taking. I understand he wanted the character to be much more of an anti-hero character, with a more mercenary streak. given that this was not the direction in which the character was going, Gareth felt dissatisfied with the role and took the decision to leave. when he was asked to return to the part for the finale, he agreed as long as he could be allowed to play Blake more in this vein. I think the interview was part of a BBC Four program interviewing cast and production people, the name of which escapes me.
