Is there an equivalent license in the UK? I've never heard of one - but then a lot of people I know think I'm making up stories when I tell them about angling licenses
Also, whilst it is probably more hastle to build a plane yourself than buy a second hand one, surely it is a much greater reward when it does lift off?

You don't need a license to fly a remote controlled airplane in America.
Or even if you legally do, no one's going to call you on it.

Licensing is a good point.
Lots of countries are not as liberal as the U.S. when it comes to radio transmitters. I'm usually resident in Belgium and have no idea whatsoever what licensing regulations would apply there.
[Since Belgium is the land of super-bureacracy you probably need to fill in a form in triplicate, bury in soft peat for three months, etc. etc.]
Any info on licensing requirements for various countries would probably be a great addition to this entry.
P.S. What about helicopters?

Helicopters are VERY hard to fly (both the real ones and RC ones). An uncle of mine once built and RC helicopter and said as much.
As for licencing of transmitters, there should be a specified band where this is allowed and most clubs check what frequency you'll be flying on so you don't end up causing interference with another flyer (most likely interference you'll get).

In scotland there is the SAA, (Scottish Aeromodellers Association) Its not essential, but will provide you with insurance.
