This is a cool take on the Alcan Highway. smiley - biggrin

'construction priorities were changed'

Could you tell us whose priorities those were? Canadians, US? Who built the Alcan highway, anyway? Was it a joint effort?

Are you currently ON the Alcan Highway? Wow.

Thank you for the suggestions. Let me think about how to implement them. I think I need to remove the last sentence about the windshield, which I wrote in 2007 while on the 2,200-mile highway...Is first-person still verboten?

Yeah - we write around it by saying 'This Researcher...' '...in This Researcher's experience...', etc. smiley - winkeye

Things to include about the Alcan Highway:
1. Pre December 7th priorities...The Whittier rail tunnel, currently 2nd longest in the world to link the port to Alaska rail.
2. Who built it...Army core of engineers, including 3 battalions of segregated African Americans. 13,000 Canadians.
3. How long was it?
4. How much did it cost?
5. What happened to it after the war?
6. What it is like to drive now...

Actually, your comments made me realize that there is a lot of fairly interesting stuff missing from my first attempt...the delivery of 10,000 fighter aircraft to Russia...logistics of the transfers...the discrimination challenges that the African American soldiers faced are examples...the list was more a response to your comment than notes to myself...there is still considerable abandoned WWII equipment along the highway...it's still a rough road in places...

I have deleted the entry for now. I fumbled around trying to insert additional material for an hour with no success...too much, too fast..
