It is probably worth mentioning that this is Lugdunum Batavorum you are talking about rather than the much better known Lugdunum, Gaul which is still a thriving city and in fact the 3rd biggest city in France. It is now known as Lyon.
Would somebody like to add a footnote?

"16th and 17th centuries" is correct - if it was just "the 17th Century" then that would require a capital letter.
