A Conversation for Four-Stroke Internal Combustion Engines
Desmo Valve systems

I thought you might like to know about a valve system used in Ducati 4-stroke motorcycles known as the Desmodromic Valve Gear System.
They differ from normal valve systems in that they don't use springs to close the valves. Instead they use a 2nd rocker arm and cam lobe to close the valve. This helps combat a problem known as valve float where the springs are not sufficient to shut the valve. This resulted in bent valves when the piston impacted with them. I believe it was originally invented by mercedes but I'm not sure as my area of interest is motorcycles.
