why is it that every time I'm nearly starving to death something really interesting has to come up on telly?!?
but this was really fascinating - it was about the Dogon in Mali who have a ritual feast (called "sigui") they celebrate just every sixty (in numbers: 60) years! COOL!!! From 2027 to 2034 the next sigui-feast will take place - yes, it will be celebrated for seven years, but of course only for a certain part of each year.... And this feast, which features quite a lot of dancing and some very amazing masks, will happen in 2027 for only the 35th time. But if you count back it means the first sigui was celebrated at around 73 B.C.! Mind boggling, isn't it?!
But even more amazing is that the time period of 60 years is calculated because of the companion of Sirius - which nowadays is no longer visible! It was calculated that it has been visible until around 50 B.C. and was being swallowed by Sirius at that time. What a spectacle it must have been in the night sky!
Anyone to sponsor me a trip to Mali?!?
