You can grow bananas in Cleethorpes. The difficulty is you need an elephant to harvest them.

There is a pretty good reason they use cuttings (I presume that's what they mean when they say clone) - that's because - just because you have a banana tree (other edible fruits are similar) in your garden doesn't mean the fruits are tasty. They will look right but taste awful most of the time.
So they use cuttings of the 'tasty' variety and stick with it.

Lack of diversity in nature tends to get found out though...
