A Conversation for Oddities of English
The word Dust

The word "Dust" also has another meaning in a small corner of Shropshire in England called Dawley. It means "Do". "Dust tha" means "Do you" and "Tha dustna" means "You don't". Dawley is only a small town and it's been gobbled up by a new town but it's been around for "bosters" (a long time) and they have a dialect there that is unique. They even have an article written in the Dawley dialect in their local newsletter-type-thing.
This humorous phrase is still doing the rounds:
"I think it's gunna raen"
"Dust?"
"No bluddy waeter!"
(ae pronounced like "air")
(u in bluddy pronounced like the u in ug - imagine a caveman!)
This dialect is spoken by mainly the older generation of Dawley, understood by a large proportion of the younger generation and spoken and understood by a large percentage of the neighbouring town of Broseley. The population of Dawley is around 9,200 and I am unable to pinpoint the population of broseley but I don't think it's as high.
the disalect really is amazing because it is absoluely unintelligable to outsiders!
