Pinniped,
Is there currently an exhibition by Kemplen in Sheffield and if so where?
I couldn't see any details about it on what I presume is his website (found by searching his name).
Thanks
Jules

Unfortunately not, and I don't think it's been exhibited for some years, though you will find the collection of work referred to at his website.
This was his graduation piece, and so right at the beginning of his career as an artist.
I know him a little, incidentally. We have a mutual close friend. I also saw the exhibition (it was my own first encounter with the story). The works were/are very diverse, a whole room-full with posters and models as well as the playing cards. It's the cards that I found memorable. Harvey reproduces some in the book, but unfortunately they're shown very small in black and white, with minimal tonal shading.
Tony Kemplen has done some fine stuff subsequently too. Much of it is quite different to the Mi Amigo work - usually humorous. It can been in the city fairly frequently and readily - I can let you know if you like.
(I don't suppose you saw last night's "Weakest Link" did you? No, I thought not. Only the mutual friend won it. Small world, yeah?)

Next time I am in town I may ask for more info and I'd like to visit the memorial as well so will try to remember to do that.
Don't watch 'weakest link',sorry, can't abide it.

As I've just posted on another related thread, there will be a large unique exhibition of related items to the crash at the memorial service at St Augustine's church at nearby Brocco Bank, Sheffield on Sunday 26th February. The collection is dedicated to Mi Amigo's crew.

Hopefully the exhibition will become annual and run alongside the ceremony each February.

Well here we are one year onwards and I've just been down to St. Augustine's Church in Sheffield for a quick site meeting. Everything appears in order for us to exhibit our US Army Air Force collection on the Sunday of Feb. 25th and I'm really looking forward to it.

Jonathan, may I ask you what time the exhibition starts? And is this an exhibition anyone can go along to see?

Right back to Jules' original question at the page-top - there's now an exhibition with Tony Kemplen's Mi Amigo playing cards in it (and a lot more by Tony and other artists too, albeit all on a war-theme)
The only trouble is, it's in Scunthorpe. Which is the Centre of the Universe, so what are you complaining about?
The exhibition is called "Conflict". It'll run from 10 February to 9 June 2007, Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, with free admission.
Venue : 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Church Square, Scunthorpe DN15 6TB
For images and further information, contact Dominic Mason at the Centre on 01724 297073 or email [email protected].
...but that's not all - TK has updated his website and you can now see a lot of the Mi Amigo stuff (including most of the cards) there, as well as reading his words about Mi Amigo. Plus all his (very diverse) other work too :

Enjoy!
