But seriously folkus, does anybody know where that expression originates. Is it British...probably. Does it have anything to do with 'bob' as money (a bob is a pound isn't it?)
I asked my uncle Bob once and he just gave me a dirty look... ah, sweet mysteries of life...

I knew someone at school who somehow gained the nickname B.O.B, which she told me in greatest confidence (oops) and much embarrassment stood for B.O (body odour) Bounder (large person). I kid you not! (children can be so cruel) But somehow, I don't think that's the origin. Bob short for Bobby? (as in policeman) or perhaps just one of those ridiculous colloquial slang-phrases that often appear in the English language, like; 'Well, I'll gu to our 'ouse' (its hard to write it how you say it!) and 'getting dark over Bill's mother's' (first being expression of amazement, second meaning rain on the way)

Yes... the bobby... If one had relations in the force willing to turn a blind eye and not interfere, then plans would go unhindered, and Bob's your uncle! Or, put all the pieces (contingencies) in place, and Bob's your uncle.
Maybe... need more input. I still suspect an historical reference to a time and particular person infamous for patronage and nepotism.
And yes, children are cruel; they know they have to grow up, sooner rather than later.
