Moving a Freezer

Would it damage a freezer if you transport it lying down? I've been told that it's OK if you let it stand for 24hrs before plugging it in, but other people have said it would permenantly damage it, any idea's?????

Any time you move a fridge or a freezer (more than just sliding it out to reach the plugs/stopcock behind it) you should leave it to stand for an hour or two before switching it back on.

If you tip it on its back or its side (or its front) you should leave it for a good 24 hours before switching it back on.

I've never had a fridge or freezer break on me after being tipped (so long as it's allowed to rest after being moved) but I suppose there is always a small chance that tipping it could dislodge some vital part. If it's an expensive fridge/freezer or you couldn't afford to replace it if something did go wrong you should be able to get insurance for a move which would cover you if the worst happened. I doubt it would be too much.

I think nothing will happen to your freezer. It just has to stand still for a few hours before you plug it in so that gases and liquids in it can come to their places. Try not to shake it too much. Nothing is so fragile as the manufacturers say, at least I think so. Be brave!!!smiley - ok

*everything* in our house (including the top up valve for the central heating) seems to live behind my freezer - you'd think it would be better designed - specially considering I designed itsmiley - laugh
