I'm interested in how researchers feel about the fact that some of us have put the "ACE" in our user names. Is it useful for new researchers to know when there is an ACE around, or are we just being self-important?

I'm trying to be helpful... I hope I'm not being self-important...

I'm enjoying the way some other researchers are taking the mickey out of us by changing their names.
I resisted changing mine and becoming the "Queen Of Hearts"

I figure it this way... When Peta becomes Peta(Community Editor) and Jim becomes Jim Lynn(Producer) and so on, I'll think about becoming Anonymouse (40077)(ACE).

Hmm... I'm not so much into the suffixes... but that's just me... Plus, it is very hard for us confundled folks to keep our links up-to-date. However, it is quite fun to see how everyone's names have changed (I'll admit to the accents... I rather liked them, but since I installed IE 5.5 they disappeared.... hey! My computer just crashed three hours ago, and I'm using an old version of explore... YES!!!)

I decided long ago not to change any of my links unless someone asked me specifically - too many names to change!
I liked the researcher (can't remember who) that added SAACE to his/her name. Apparently it stood for "Self-Appointed ACE"
I hope that a few newbies will seek us out because they've seen all the ACES listed on the "whose on-line" popup window - of course this assumes they know about the popup window. Has anyone had a visit from a newbie yet asking for any help? I haven't really seen many visitors to the ACE homepage yet, other than ACEs.........

I've seen afew on the ACE homepage... well, at least two. I've been asked for help on the pages of the newbies that I've greeted, in the forum with the original greeting. I even had someone who ISN'T a newbie come by my homepage and ask for some good and entertaining links because she was getting a bit lost. I felt useful
The reason you can't remember who added the SAACE to the end of his name is that he changes his name on an almost daily basis, just for fun. I can't remember if SAACE is still on there or not...

hullo.
it's just that dwaggie-person.
here is my .02 about putting (ACE) after your names.
I think it is a good idea. Especially the part about it showing up that way in the popup list. If a newbie DID know about the popup it would make it very easy for one of them to find one of you. And, assuming each of you have the lovely new badge on your homepage, if a newbie clicks on an ACE's name out of dire need, or perverse curiosity, the badge could link them to the ACES home page where all would be explained.
And if a friendly person wants to be a SAACE, I say that's fine, cause they will have to explain what an ACE is anyway. [As in, 'say what's that strange string of letters stuck to the end of your name? A condiment?'.] Then 'the cat would be out of the bag' and the questioner would end up at the [real] ACEs page, eventually. I assume there will be a permanent link on the front page to the ACES and Peta.
Keep up the good work there, folks. You all remind me of the friendly mattresses of Squornshellous Zeta.

fank oo *flollopes in a friendly, mattressy way*
but yeah - I'm keeping the suffix so that newbies may find me... and it helped, I got some messages from slow newbies that saw my name in a greeting to a different newbie. and two mails - from germans that were too shy to post their so-called stupid questions and found in this thread that I'm german... I'm helping them with their homepages, until they feel confident enough to swim on their own .
so I figure I keep the suffix until general consent to the contrary . and as to other groups not having any suffix to their name: well - the sub-eds and the PTWVHEN don't WANT to be buggered, we're here ESPECIALLY to be buggered...
and yes, I loved those name-changes too, especially the (PR)ACE *giggle* (which gets a quite erm... different meaning in the local dialect...)

Peta and Jim and Mark and everybody on the staff don't need suffixes because their names appear in bold italics - ours don't, so I feel the need to identify myself as an ACE in some way - it means I don't have to say it every single time I join an ACE-related conversation or greet somebody.
How useful

Hey Irving, where did your suffix go? Did you change your mind, or are you leaving the ACEs?
The ACE Suffix
Irving Washington - Gone Writing Posted Dec 14, 1999
In some forum somewhere I said that I was getting rid of the suffix when we got our badges. My badge is in a fairly permanent place on my page now, so I felt I should honor that. I'm thinking of putting it back, but for now I'm just doing what I said I'd do a week or so ago

PS-- When did Skeleton go AWOL?

As a member of the 'great unwashed masses' of researchers, I think having your suffix attached is good for exactly the conclusion that was drawn here. It is easy for the rest of us to tell that you ARE an ACE if the suffix is attached to your name.
I wont respect you less if you change your mind, Irving.

PS.I think Skelly went missing a couple of days ago.

If you look around a bit you'll find out why Skeleton left. It's pretty silly.

Just popping in to say Hi! I'd gone quiet too, but with good reason... As far as the suffix goes, I can go either way. I was pretty much just waiting to see if we were going to be "uniform" about it, or if it really mattered.

The Ghost Of TV's Frink Posted Dec 15, 1999
Hello Amanda I doubt we'll be uniform about it, but I don't see any problem with that. Freedom of choice!

MaW Posted Dec 15, 1999
IT doesn't really matter who does what. We've all got the Ace badge on our user pages, and of course you might not want to go around advertising your status.
I do, though. And as I mentioned before, it reduces the amount of explaining I have to do.
