Use 'em or lose 'em.

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article4799560.ece

I'm not going to pretend that I use most of these (though I have honestly used the word Embrangle by accident. I thought I was making it up, turns out I was wrong.) However, there's a lot of good words there. And just because the dictionary's gonna take 'em away doesn't mean we have to stop using them. smiley - tongueout

I plan on using several of these in stories. Not to save them from leaving the pages of a dusty dictionary, but because I think they're cool.

And let's face it, if no one wants to use them initially, they're not gonna look them up in the dictionary.

Affy,
Your link led me from endangered species of words to Sarah Palin(dromes) to James Bond (007) gadgets. Thanks for the 'first step' in a series of tenuously related material. I feel smarter and more fulfilled already...

P.S.: You've rated the longest tag-line (to date) I've ever used in a posting. (And I've incorporated several of the words poised on the verge of caducity.)

I'm awed to be the catalyst for your lengthiest tagline to date. smiley - smiley

It's even more impressive when you note that you used the numeral 2 instead of the word "to." And the symbol & instead of the word "and." You *could* have made it a whole character or three longer than you did,m but you didn't waiver from your principles. Truly noteworthy.

And you know, this reminds me that I've been meaning to incorporate more words from the meaning of Liff into my everyday speech. But with some exceptions, those opportunities come up more rarely than I'd like.

You will notice, Affy, that I broke the tagline into three sections, in order to accommodate the H2G2 BBS contstraints. There was an "opportunity to learn from a mistake" on Lil's thread (many moons ago) when I 'physically stretched' the thread almost to a breaking point. My tagline--or perhaps a series of smileys--ran too wide for the normal screen size, and the system did its level best to adjust by widening the parameters of the text. This had the effect of moving the right-hand margin well off the screen and required the reader to scroll back-and-forth on every posting to read them. I believe we finally had to get a Mod to delete the offending post in a last-ditch attempt to let the forum 'snap back' to normal size.

(...and ~that~ may be the shortest tagline I've ever used. You've scored ~again~, Affy!)

Hmm ... on reflection, I fear that these words may not be sufficiently cromulent for me to embiggen my vocabulary with them. smiley - winkeye *ducks*

Great, Yar, just great. Now I have to find that "Simpsonic" CD and listen to the ballad of Jedediah (or is it Jebediah?) Springfield again.
