h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Sorted out our candidate for the Glasgow North East bye-election today. Isn't it nice when weeks of planning and work pay off? When the announcement's made in ten days or so, it'll make headlines - and not just in Britain.

But there's so much to do. Sort out campaign office(s), hire staff, get press shots done, video to make, book billboards ...

This time around I don't have to put my ugly mug in front of the camera. Instead I get the far more interesting job of pulling the strings behind the scenes.

So, I'm going to bow out of here again and return after (I expect) Nov 12th with a story about winning a bye-election.

Well - that was interesting. Lousy result but quite an experience.

I must get properly involved in politics one day.

What do you do when you hand deliver a letter to your TD's constituency office and get no reply, so you post the same letter a week or so later and still get no reply? Does it matter that the TD in question is also the Taoiseach?

Good point and one that irritates me too. How on earth can someone be a Govt minister and yet still devote as much time to constituency matters as a normal MP? One proposal we make is when someone is made a minister, they resign their seat to allow someone else to do the job whilst they concentrate on being a minister. Might slow down the musical chairs at every cabinet re-shuffle too.

Though the letter in question was about national policy, not local stuff.

Do you have a version of Theyworkforyou.com there? You can check the average time it takes each politician to reply to letters. Some are quite good, but others are poor.

I'm still waiting for a reply from my MP about the Royal Mail. God knows why she is still our MP because everyone hates her!
