I don't understand transmissions -- or much of any machinery at all.
The only transmission I do understand is a no no: transmission of viruses.

This piece of machinery makes a striking photo. 
But I can't imagine how it works. Maybe the chain turns a shaft, which turns a cogwheel which.... There seem to be too many cogwheels!

It seems to be driving some kind of conveyor belt (right side of the photo) but does it really matter. I like the composition of the photo.
