This calls for a story, of the sort that begin 'It was a dark and stormy night! smiley - smiley

OK, let's give it a whirl. 'It was a dark and stormy night when Pastor Thornfield arrived to lock up the church. It was always kept open during the day, because there was never much of value in there, but he locked it at night to stop the local drunks from bedding down. He looked down to find the right key in the bunch he carried, and saw a bundle of rags on the church step. He stooped and moved one of the rags and heard a thin cry. With a gasp of surprise, he picked up the bundle, parted the rags and saw a pink and wrinkled baby.'

smiley - laugh That's a very good start to a story set in England. Since I have the advantage of knowing what's on the other side of the road - and how far from civilisation that church is - let me try one...

It was a dark and stormy night. Across the road from the church, George, the farmer and purveyor of used tractor parts, looked out of his window and noticed a strange and unearthly light near the front door of the Holiness church. The light was moving in an irregular fashion - now up, now down, forward, back...it was unnerving.

'What in the world?' exclaimed George. He'd never known the Holiness church to be involved with any spooky doings - at least not at night, while the congregation wasn't present. On Sunday mornings, things tended to get a bit weird when Velma Entwhistle started speaking in tongues...

'I'd better go and check it out,' he told his wife Martha. 'If I'm not back in fifteen minutes, call 911 and Pastor Bill. Bill will get here before 911 does.'

Threading his way through the maze of partially cannibalised agricultural vehicles, George crossed the road and shone a cautious flashlight at the church door.

There he saw an amazing thing: a large black bear was prowling the front steps of the church. In one paw, it held a doughnut - obviously, the ladies had forgotten to lock up the kitchen after the prayer brunch. In the other paw, the bear held a glowstick, the source of the uncanny light. It was probably left over from the youth social last week. Somehow, the bear had managed to activate it and was 'letting his light so shine'.

George backed off and went back to the house to wait for reinforcements. That bear may or may not have been filled with the Spirit, but it outweighed him by at least 200 pounds.

smiley - laugh They're pretty smart, at that. They and the raccoons are the reason people need complicated locks on their dumpsters. Bears, of course, will just steal the whole dumpster and loot it at leisure...
