Is it a spelunking (cave exploring) Verein?

No, they mostly do walking and climbing and such things. But my father is part of a spelunking Verein. He doesn't do much actual exploring anymore but he did when he was younger. Now he seems to mostly put op all kinds of measuring instruments in various smaller caves with one of his friends.

That sounds fascinating. 
It also makes me a trifle claustrophobic, and definitely symnpathetic to miners like the ones in "October sky."
I would be wary of entering caves, hence my motto "Cave-at emptor."
