That 
joke was told by a biology professor on the first day of class back in 1971. We looked at him in horror.
He was a French-speaker from Tunisia, so we put it down to North African humour.

I heard the joke from one of my colleagues in the early 1980s. he taught me some useful tips about saving time in the supermarket. I always think well of people who have helped me with useful things.

Don't know when exacly I heard the joke, but definitely later than 1971.
