h2g2 Communications

The h2g2 Community Artists (U14916409) have produced two fabulous calendars: a digital 2011 advent calendar and a print 2012 calendar.

Malabarista (U1528154) is spearheading the effort to fill the h2g2 Post Advent Calendar (A87723967) with special treats. Each December day until Christmas brings us another new smiley and a classic h2g2 entry. Check back often to find out what new smileys have been made available.

Tavaron (U1314679) led a project to produce the first ever h2g2 calendar, available now at lulu.com. The h2g2 2012 calendar features stunning photographs from researchers the world over. Dozens of days carry the A-page number of an appropriate Guide entry, so the calendar is an excellent introduction to h2g2. Proceeds from the sale of the h2g2 2012 calendar will go to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Foundation which supports literacy and literary causes.

Even if lunchtime is an illusion, the h2g2 2012 calendar is a lasting and enjoyable present for anyone on your holiday gift-giving list.

Happy Nerd

I just bought three of them. I hope this will help raise money for this site. It will certainly help me put gifts under the tree in a few weeks. smiley - winkeye

I've seem the images, and they're amazing, we'll soon* be ordering some.

Just to confirm Paul H (and others) the proceeds from this will go to charity rather than the site itself.

Z, posting with an official Chief Herder of Cats hat on.

I have no problem with the profits going to charities. Many charities are struggling these days, with so many people relying on them.

It's only just come up on Lulu, is that a problem? Why should it be put on Amazon too?

Hi Mina.

Thanks for asking. The paperwork for the charity commission is still being finalized, so we don't have a reg number yet.

At the moment it's only available through lulu. We've chosen to use a print-on-demand service to reduce our overheads, as that means that we don't have to bear the costs of a large print run that may not all sell, or handle the postage and packing ourselves.

It's just a simple question, I'd prefer to buy it from a site I'm already registered with. smiley - huh

I can see why that would be the case, much easier to buy through somewhere you're already registered with.

You never know, if all goes well next year we may be able to get a calender printed with a publisher and get it available on amazon and in all good bookshops.

I'm not really here

I've never heard of Lulu before, which is why I don't want to give them my personal details. So I guess you could interpret that as 'not liking' but I prefer to think of it as 'not wanting to spread my details all over the net for just one-off purchases if I can help it'.

smiley - ok

>> What's the foundation's charity reg number Z?

That'll be available when the announcements about the Foundation are put out. I'm not working on that myself, so I don't know how far along we are with that. It's "a case of watch this space" or "subscribe to this forum" anyway.

>> Also is there anywhere else we can buy it? Amazon etc?

Probably not. Some people do try reselling their Lulu products via Amazon but that's a different ballgame really. Also, Amazon have their own self-publishing service.

One of the things I like about the Lulu service is they save time and shipping costs by printing UK-delivered orders in the UK, and US-delivered orders in the US. 'Tis neat.

It didn't seem hard to register with Lulu. Payment by PayPal was another convenience. smiley - smiley

I'm not really here

I've had a quick look at the site, I want to write some ebooks, so might join in the future, and it does sound like a good idea, but once you've had someone steal money from your card, it puts you off anything but big names. smiley - blue
