narrow minded ? - please qualify
I speak bad french, but I get by in France - my wife speak good german (though she won't admit it's good) - my 'bad' french is a product of the crass way the British teach french at school, followed by a lot of work (by me) trying to make the conversation thing work. I'm painfully & embarrassingly aware of how lousily I speak french (& spell english ), especially in comparison to my european colleagues.

No offence intended by my statement. What I am saying is narrow-mindedness by a national scope. The government will not spend oodles of money on educating people to speak better foreign languages - simply because they do not have to!
In Denmark we most definitely have to study other languages in order to make ourselves known within the international society.
So, as you can see, it is in fact quite complicated.
P.S. I also speak a lousy French. So lousy that I flunked my exam to be precise...

I speak lousy french and german, but I passed my exams. I don't expect for even 1 minute to be able to hold a conversation with either countries ppl in their native language

I've never passed a french, nor german exam, I guess that's because I've never had any... and I don't speak a word french
I've had an English exam though, and I passed, wee!
I agree with KimotoCat, how would danes and norwegians do, internationally speaking, if we couldn't speak at least one "world-language"? but we can, not all of us, but pretty damn close!
yup.

Don't worry about that.
From where I'm standing, red nosed, wet eyed, fatigued and generally feeling bad, you're not missing anything that major.
