There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

There are a few Writing-Guidelines transgressions in the entry, but nothing that can't easily be put right smiley - ok

I love this! Just the right combination of information and dry wit for my liking. I wish everybody's 'first Entry' were on these lines.

I agree, super for a first entry!

Of course, in the name of squashing the spirit of triumph, I'm going to point out what minor errors ought to be fixed. *puts on 'pedantic' hat*

smiley - starthree dimensional --> three-dimensional

smiley - star1830's --> 1830s

smiley - starAfter the American Civil War, tax on alcohol --> After the American Civil War, the taxes on alcohol

smiley - starUnphased --> Unfazed, I think, but would it be 'unfased' for British spelling?smiley - smiley

smiley - star<> I don't really understand this sentence. Are you trying to say that the founder undertook to see whether there was another Hell, USA? If so, what did he find? Is Hell, MI the only town of that name?

smiley - star"bright and beautiful." --> 'bright and beautiful'. BTW, all your double quotes should become single quotes, in accordance with British usage and House Style.

smiley - starLikewise, "hell." --> 'hell'.

smiley - starMr. Reeves --> Mr Reeves

smiley - staraweful --> awful

smiley - starIs it whiskey or whisky in British spelling? I'm not quite sure.

smiley - starAnd isn't there a different way to spell 'mosquito'? Or am I just imagining that one?

smiley - starexplatives --> expletives

smiley - starball room --> ballroom

smiley - starReeve's --> Reeves' or Reeves's

smiley - starRace track --> racetrack

That's all I can see. Again, this is a very good entry overall. I was laughing rather a lot when I read it!

I think it would be entirely appropriate if (assuming this entry is recommended), this one gets picked by HELL (Germany) smiley - tongueout

Whiskey will suffice for whatever passes for that drink in the USA. Proper scotch is spelled 'whisky'.

Proper scotch is spelled 'whisky'.

I've given up explaining it - also why someone from Scotland isn't Scotch.

Thank you one and all for your comments and editing suggestions! I'm relatively new to the whole British standard, as you may be able to tell (is "wanked" a British term? is it not "wankered"?), but I'll fix that stuff up right away.

**rubs hand with glee**

It's always me that gets to explain these things, isn't it.

'wanked' = masturbated (past participle).
'wankered' = drunk (present or past dative).

I don't think you ought to bandy these words about too much in a non-linguistic sense, as certain British people find them quite offensive and you might get moderated.

I wonder if there's a town anywhere called Heaven. I bet it's a terribly dull place.smiley - winkeye

People will name towns anything, really. Isn't there a place in New Mexico called Asshole? I think I read about that once.

Couldn't find "Asshole" in the US, but here's some "interesting" cities here in Arizona:

Angell
Arsenic Tubs
Bagdad
Bumble Bee
Chloride
Christmas
Copper Mine
Cyclopic
Eagar
Friendly
Globe
Happy Jack
Hermit's Rest
Honeymoon
Horse Thief Basin
Magma
Mexican Water
Nowhere
Paradise
Pool
Skull Valley
The Gap

No Hell, although that what everyone calls Phoenix in the summer!
