Surely not. It's stretching credulity to suggest any thematic similarity between V and Guy Fawkes. I'm not that much of a conspiracy theorist. It's a novel idea, though.

.....U is for Una who slipped down a drain.
V is for Victor squashed under a train.
W is for Winnie embedded in ice.

As I've mentioned before, I was brought up Catholic. We used to celebrate Bonfire Night like everyone else, and there was no sense that it was anti-Catholic.

I remember asking about this when I was a bit older and knew a bit more about the story. The explanation I got was that although Catholics were being persecuted, blowing up Parliament was not a particularly Catholic thing to do, and I think there's some evidence that it was foiled or betrayed by Catholics.

Had the plot succeeded, it would have been disastrous for the country, probably led to civil war, and would have been particularly bad for the Catholic community and Catholicism in the UK in general. 5th November was a celebration of a disaster avoided.... or at least it had been until it morphed into its modern form of fireworks and ginger parkin.

No, it's a movement for window cleaners who think they invented rock n roll.

...unlike the civil war which followed it a few decades later?
